Come October, we hold our Annual General Meeting (AGM 2023) to review the year\u2019s activities and begin our planning for 2024\/25. This Spring, we have also undertaken several urban upgrade and beautification projects, adding greenery and resurfacing roads in Elsies River to improve the community experience of people living and working in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our AGM is coming up. All stakeholders are invited to a review of the year’s activities and planning for 2024\/25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resolutions presented at the AGM can only be voted for by bonafide members. All non-members wishing to take part must be registered before 13 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Road resurfacing for Elsies River<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Elsies River CID management team constantly communicate with all the relevant City of Cape Town departments to ensure that the area gets the attention and services it needs.  Over the last few years, the condition of the roads in the industrial area have been continuously monitored and reported to the Road Infrastructure Maintenance (RIM) branch.  They have the difficult task of planning, coordinating, prioritising and funding road-resurfacing projects for the entire City.  It is not always possible to resurface all roads in an area all at once and therefore, this type of long-term rehabilitation and maintenance often takes place in stages over the span of several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

In a previous stage of the project, RIM resurfaced the road between 8th<\/sup> Avenue and Epping Avenue in the industrial area. The roads between the railway line and 8th<\/sup>\u00a0avenue continued to deteriorate, and the urgency of dealing with this was continuously communicated through the Elsies River CID to the City.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are very pleased to report that our call for assistance resulted in the resurfacing of all the roads needing attention between 8th<\/sup>\u00a0avenue and the railway line; in particular 16th<\/sup>\u00a0Street and 6th<\/sup>\u00a0avenue needed the most urgent repair.\u00a0The industrial area now has a new set of roads for the majority of the area and will certainly contribute to the economic activity of the area for years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pop-up Park for Elsies River<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even though it is an industrial area, there is always a need for some form of public space in our City where people can enjoy some fresh air and simply enjoy their surroundings. \u00a0The ERCD noticed this need, for many of the factory workers that took to the sidewalks during their lunch breaks to enjoy a bit of fresh air and meet in a common gathering place.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the ERCID accumulated some funding for the placement of two sets of benches and tables along the grassed area near the Elsies River canal. Situated under some large trees, this was the perfect setting for people from the nearby factories to have their lunch when the weather permits.\u00a0In the initial round, the budget only allowed for the placement of benches.\u00a0These were an immediate hit with the staff of the surrounding factories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, the ERCID set aside a further small portion of the budget and with these funds the seating areas could be converted into the final \u201cpop-up park\u201d initially envisaged for the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raised paving was placed around the benches, more public litter bins were installed and the seating was augmented with some flower planters that will beautify the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who says an industrial area cannot also be attractive \u2013 even in a small way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logging a service request with the City<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You too can assist with urban management and the growing number of faults and service requests that the City and ERCID deal with on a daily basis. By reporting water and electricity faults and other maintenance requirements such as potholes, missing road signs or blocked stormwater drains, through the correct channels<\/em>, we and the City are able to attend to these service requests and log their status in an effective way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are multiple channels through which you can do this \u2013 the easiest being the online portal at capetown.gov.za\/servicerequests<\/a>, which is also now available in the City of Cape Town mobile app<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
