For residents and businesses, preparation is key to ensuring safety and continuity. At the same time, the City of Cape Town is stepping up support for our most vulnerable residents through its strengthened Winter Readiness Programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This season, we share practical tips on how to prepare your property for winter, and we highlight the ways the City is working with shelters and non-profit organisations to offer care and dignity to those most in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ERCID Winter Readiness: Prepare Your Property and Stay Safe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, our City Improvement District teams ramp up winter preparedness efforts, working with the City of Cape Town to clear stormwater drains, report damaged infrastructure, and ensure that public lighting and safety measures are in place. But we also rely on local businesses and residents to help prevent flooding, minimise damage and reduce risk in the public realm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some essential ways you can help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Winter Action List for Businesses and Property Owners<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clear gutters and drains<\/strong> of leaves, litter and debris to prevent blockages and flooding.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check outdoor lighting<\/strong> to ensure walkways and entrances are well lit during shorter daylight hours. In response, the City of Cape Town is rolling out an expanded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capetown.gov.za\/Media-and-news\/City%20boosts%20winter%20support%20for%2010%20shelters%20for%20the%20homeless\"><strong>Winter Readiness Programme<\/strong><\/a> for 2025, working with nonprofit shelters to provide warmth, safety and a pathway to long-term support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the Programme Delivers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>R1.2 million<\/strong> in essential goods distributed to shelters, including:<br>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Blankets and mattresses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hygiene packs and cleaning supplies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food parcels and warm meals<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>R230,000<\/strong> in EPWP funding for shelters to hire additional staff to manage increased winter demand<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This tangible support helps shelters meet the urgent needs of people experiencing homelessness during harsh weather while also ensuring their facilities run safely and smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Network of Care<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Partner organisations include trusted names like <strong>The Haven<\/strong>, <strong>MES<\/strong>, <strong>U-Turn Ministries<\/strong>, <strong>Oasis \u2013 Reach for Your Dreams<\/strong>, <strong>EI Theos<\/strong>, and <strong>TASP<\/strong>. These shelters do more than offer temporary refuge. They provide skills development, addiction recovery, counselling, and job placement services to help people break the cycle of homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these organisations partner with our CIDs&nbsp; \u2013&nbsp; such as MES who work as our \u201cgreen ants\u201d, cleaning and assisting urban maintenance tasks all year round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City ensures that participating shelters meet high standards in public benefit, safety, and developmental programming \u2013 reflecting a long-standing tradition of community care and accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ERCID Urban Maintenance and Cleaning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Our maintenance teams are always busy improving our community by addressing issues of maintenance and cleaning of
