{"id":271,"date":"2017-12-07T12:21:48","date_gmt":"2017-12-07T12:21:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elsiesrivercid.co.za\/wordpress\/?p=271"},"modified":"2017-12-11T12:59:30","modified_gmt":"2017-12-11T12:59:30","slug":"water-saving-and-greening-go-hand-in-hand-for-ercid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elsiesrivercid.co.za\/wordpress\/uncategorized\/water-saving-and-greening-go-hand-in-hand-for-ercid\/","title":{"rendered":"Water saving and greening go hand-in-hand for ERCID"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a year of serious drought and steadily increasing water restrictions, it may seem like an odd time to be greening an industrial area.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you\u2019ve recently spent some time in the Elsies River City Improvement District (ERCID), you may have noticed a potted garden or two, brightening up the stark facades of buildings and factories.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/elsiesrivercid.co.za\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/25.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-273 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/elsiesrivercid.co.za\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/25.jpg\" alt=\"greening_Elsies_River_improvement_district\" width=\"433\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elsiesrivercid.co.za\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/25.jpg 433w, https:\/\/elsiesrivercid.co.za\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/25-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How can this be?<\/p>\n<p>Well, according to Chairperson John Houston, the ERCID\u2019s potted gardening projects \u2013 visible at Weavewell in Coleman Street and between Messaris Chips and SA Forklift at the canal off 16th street<b> \u2013 <\/b>have gone hand-in-hand with massive water-saving measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur greening efforts have not been affected by the drought at all, as we\u2019ve been caring for the gardens with rainwater collected from the roofs of our buildings,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the ERCID, various buildings have been equipped with 1000-litre tanks to catch up rainwater, which can be put to use in various ways.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/elsiesrivercid.co.za\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/24.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-274 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/elsiesrivercid.co.za\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/24-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Elsies_river_improvement_district_Watertank\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elsiesrivercid.co.za\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/24-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/elsiesrivercid.co.za\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/24-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/elsiesrivercid.co.za\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/24.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For gardening purposes, the stored water is transferred to the ERCID\u2019s legendary home-built fire truck and then distributed sparingly among the different pots.<\/p>\n<p>Houston says that having a bit of greenery and other general maintenance \u2013 such as cleaning lampposts, weeding and keeping the streets clean &#8211; has made a world of difference to an otherwise relatively uninspiring area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI personally have been complimented by my visitors to say how clean, neat and safe the Elsies River City Improvement District has become,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, the ERCID hopes to further improve on these projects and also to encourage businesses to give their buildings a new coat of paint.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a year of serious drought and steadily increasing water restrictions, it may seem like an odd time to be greening an industrial area.
